Bermuda is the northern most chain of coral islands, located in the North Atlantic Ocean, about 700 miles off the coast of North Carolina. It is approximately a two hour flight from New York, Boston and Washington DC, and a seven hour flight from London. Major airlines service the island, and there are frequent flights. The temperature is temperate - around 60ºF during the winter, and 85ºF during the summer. It has a population of just over 60,000, has never experienced unemployment within living memory, and occupies an area of just over 20 square miles. What it lacks in size, it more than makes up for in quality.
Bermuda is one of the few remaining Overseas Territories of the British Government, although it is self-governing in all matters except for defence and foreign affairs. It was founded in 1609, and is an oasis of financial and political stability; the last election was held in 1998 and elections, based on the parliamentary system, are normally held every five years. The difference between Democrats and Republicans in the USA and Conservative and Labour in the United Kingdom.
Bermuda is financially independent from the UK, has never received a penny in aid during its long existence and is a model of financial stability. There are no income taxes, capital gains taxes, withholding taxes on interest and dividends, and international companies are guaranteed by the Bermuda Government not to have such taxes imposed until 2016. The Bermuda dollar, issued by the Bermuda Monetary Authority (BMA), is on par with the United States dollar and is freely convertible. The BMA, an independent arm of the Bermuda Government, regulates all financial operations in Bermuda which is done with an emphasis on common sense and financial probity. FML has excellent relations with the BMA.
The per capita GDP of Bermuda is around $40,000, one of the highest in the world. Whilst salaries and operating costs are high, the productivity of the Bermudian labour force is equally high. The high standard of living is also matched by a high quality of life - crime levels are minimal, neatness is a national obsession, sporting facilities are excellent, there are no snakes, and there are excellent hotels and restaurants. Bermuda is one of the most delightful and beautiful places in the world, and with its absence of direct taxation, it is a great place from which to do business, and to protect one's assets.
